These are questions related to designing and building amps, heads, combos, preamps, occasionally speaker cabinets. Some of the answers are clear facts, others are opinions. We've tried to carefully differentiate between the two, but if you think we missed that boat on a question, please send email to <agaATrru.com> (replace the AT with "@" in your email!) with the details.
If your question isn't answered in any of these FAQs, ask it on alt.guitar.amps !
Casey4s (David McClain) has some cabinet tutorials at http://s238.photobucket.com/albums/ff243/Casey4s/The%20Tolex%20Tutorial-Tolexing%20a%20Cabinet/ .
Casey4s (David McClain) has an output transformer impedance help page at http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/6b29ab49/bc/Output+Transformer+Impedance+(Text+file)/OT+Impedance+(HTML).htm?bcRFv17ARwucVNq3 .

Additionally, Randall Aiken (of Aiken Amplifier fame) has a lot of excellent information available on his web site: http://www.aikenamps.com/ (click on "Tech Info") There's quite a bit of important theory and excellent advice there, including a list of very helpful books.
Among the books, a must-have for a tube amp designer is one of the tube handbooks. The RCA Receiving Tube manuals are among the most commonly used. A Radiotron Design Handbook is also quite handy. You can also find a wealth of tube data on the web, including a program and database you can download for your Microsoft-based computer; see the AGA Sources FAQ at http://aga.rru.com/FAQs/sources.html#tubedata1 for more information.
Besides the tube data locator software, Duncan Munro also makes a wealth of other information and software available on his site at http://www.duncanamps.com/ including programs to help design or modify tone stacks and power supplies.
The AX84 project (http://www.ax84.com/) has schematics, build tips, forums, theory, and all sorts of useful information.
For X11 (Linux, Unix, even Windows) the only real choice is xcircuit (available at http://bach.ece.jhu.edu/~tim/programs/xcircuit/). Fortunately it's an excellent choice.
I'm still looking for a short list of recommended programs for Windows and MacOS, but here's a long list from the net:
>Subject: Re: Freeware schem.capture/board-design/auto-router ? >Date: Fri, 16 Feb 2001 07:40:43 +0000 >From: Terry PinnellAdditionally, I have been made aware of a shareware package for routing circuit boards using CorelDRAW, Merlin PCB Designer. Details are at http://www.geocities.com/MerliPCB/index.html.>Newsgroups: sci.electronics.cad With minor variations, this question seems to arise here (and/or in one of the other sci.electronics newsgroups) several times a month. So I've listed below about 50 ECAD packages with URLs and brief notes, with an emphasis on amateur/hobby use. They're obviously a very mixed bag in terms of capabilities, full version price and popularity. Most of them include schematic drawing. Many include PCB design (a few with auto-routing). Relatively few incorporate simulation. Terry Pinnell Hobbyist, West Sussex, UK ========================= ======== B2SPICE BeigeBag www.beigebag.com "Analog simulator ... includes 3,000+ parts from manufacturers." From $99. Also B2 LOGIC "Digital circuit simulation & analysis tool with circuit editor". Demos cannot save and print and are limited to a certain number of components in a circuit. Trials are fully functional but are limited to 30 days use. ========================= ======== CADSTAR ZUKEN http://www.zuken.com/solutions els.asp Schematic and routing. XCircuit is my UNIX/X11 (and now Windows, if you have an X-Server running) program for drawing publishable-quality electrical circuit schematic diagrams and related figures, and produce circuit netlists through schematic capture... XCircuit is flexible enough to be used as a generic program for drawing just about anything, and is competitive with powerful programs such as "xfig". There are probably quite a few. Steve Burgess found one linked from http://sound.westhost.com/project27.htm . It includes some notes on speaker cabs. he also sells boards.
One collection is available at http://www.firebottle.com/ampage/homebrew.cgi?cat=ga. This incldues several done by folks from AGA.
Thanks to Ylo (ctaylor) for this link.
I'm going to include the key phrase "headphone positioning trick" in this post, so people can find it easily. :) I do it similar to that, but without initially dedicating the PT to a spot on the chassis...
The important part here is that there is no chance you're going to have the PT's secondary wires connecting to anything, and the OT will only connect two wires to headphones (and have no other connections). There is no electrical connection between the PT and OT for this test.
This is only going to help a person determine how far apart, and what orientation the PT, OT, and choke will have with respect to one another for induced hum consideration. This has nothing to do with feedback, hiss, oscillations, heater hum, or any other noise issue. The rest of your layout, some with respect to the PT and OT positions, will tell that tale.
Thanks to James Peters at the AX84 forum (http://www.ax84.com/bbs/) for this one.
